Dementia Care at Home in Indianapolis
Familiar rooms, a familiar routine, and a caregiver who knows how to keep the day calm. Our non-medical dementia support helps your parent stay in the home they know, with help shaped around the person they are.
Support that starts with the person, not the diagnosis
Dementia does not arrive all at once. It shows up in small things first. The same question three times in an hour. A pan left on a warm burner. A winter coat on in July. Most families do not need a facility at that stage. They need someone in the house who understands what is happening and can steady the day. That is what our dementia care at home in Indianapolis is built to do.
We are a non-medical agency, so let us be plain about what that means. Our caregivers do not administer medication, change dressings, or perform any nursing or therapy task. What they do is show up on a schedule, help with bathing, dressing, meals and safety, give reminders and cues, and pay close attention. When something changes, you hear about it. Medical decisions stay with your loved one’s doctors, where they belong.
What dementia support at home usually includes
Every plan is written around one person, but most dementia schedules include some version of these.
A day with a shape to it
The same caregiver, the same order of events, the same cues at the same times. Routine takes pressure off memory and makes the day easier to follow.
Gentle cueing, one step at a time
Bathing, dressing and grooming broken into single small steps, with hand over hand help only when it is welcome and actually needed.
Redirection instead of correction
Arguing with a memory rarely works. We redirect to a task, a photo, a snack or a short walk, then return to the moment once the tension drops.
Wandering safety at home
We watch for the hours when wandering tends to start, keep exits in view, and flag clutter, loose rugs or stairs that raise the risk of a fall.
Support through sundowning
Late afternoons get their own plan. More light in the room, a quieter activity, an earlier supper, and a caregiver who never raises their voice.
Reminders, meals and the household
Medication reminders, meals your parent will actually eat, laundry and light housekeeping, so the home stays familiar and easy to move around in.
Who this is for
Families reach out at very different points, and all of them are the right point.
- A parent with early memory loss who is still mostly independent at home
- Someone who manages mornings well but comes undone by late afternoon
- A husband or wife caring alone who needs real hours off each week
- Adult children across Marion County who live too far to check in daily
- A loved one recently diagnosed, while the household builds a new routine
- Someone who needs overnight supervision so the family can sleep
Why Indianapolis families call Cater2U
We are clear about what we are
Non-medical care, said plainly and held to. Caregivers cue and remind, never administer. If a need crosses into nursing territory, we tell you and help you find the right professional.
Two offices, close to home
Our east side office sits on East Washington Street, with a second office on Smith Valley Road in Greenwood. That keeps schedules realistic and visits on time.
Care that can change with you
Alongside in-home care we run an Adult Day Center, a Residential Stay program and a durable medical equipment supply arm. As needs shift, you are not starting over with strangers.
Questions families ask about this
No. Cater2U is a non-medical home care agency. Our caregivers do not administer medication, give injections, or perform nursing tasks. They give reminders and cues, help with bathing, dressing, meals and safety, and keep you informed about what they notice day to day. Your loved one’s clinicians stay in charge of every medical decision.
We cannot claim that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What familiar surroundings and a predictable routine can do is support calmer days and reduce some of the confusion that comes with unfamiliar places and faces. Many families find a steady caregiver helps the afternoons go better. That is support, not treatment.
That pattern is often called sundowning. Our caregivers plan the harder part of the day in advance. More light in the room, a lighter activity, an earlier snack, a short walk if the weather allows, and a calm voice that does not argue. We also note what seemed to set the mood off, so the next day starts with better information.
That is common and it is not stubbornness. We usually start small, often with a short visit built around something he already enjoys, and let trust build before adding personal care. Introducing the caregiver as someone helping around the house, rather than a helper for him, often makes the first week easier. We plan that approach with you first.
We cannot promise to prevent wandering, but we can help reduce the risk. That means closer supervision during the hours it tends to happen, an activity or walk that meets the urge to go somewhere, a look at door and stair safety in the home, and a plan you agree to in advance for what the caregiver does if your parent heads for the door.
It varies a great deal. Some families begin with a few afternoons a week to cover sundowning. Others need overnight or around the clock support from the start. We talk through what the days actually look like, then build the schedule around the hard hours. You can add or reduce hours as things change, and they will change.
People who need this often need
Personal Care
