In-home care for veterans that does not feel like being managed

Most veterans we work with spent their adult lives being the person who handled things. Accepting help with a shower or a meal is not a small adjustment, and treating it as one is the fastest way to have the door shut on you.

We go slowly, we explain what we are doing, and we take direction from the person whose home it is. The care plan belongs to him, not to us and not to his children.

Questions from veteran families

Non-medical in-home support: help with bathing, dressing and grooming, homemaker and chore services, meal preparation, transport into the community and to appointments, wellness checks, companionship and respite for the family. It is the same care we provide to any client, delivered by caregivers who understand that being helped can sit uncomfortably with a lifetime of self-reliance.

We are not benefits advisers and we do not make eligibility determinations. What we can do is talk through payment options including private pay and long-term care insurance, and help you explore whether you qualify for other programs. For anything official, your county veterans service officer or va.gov is the right place to start.

Yes. Plenty of the households we work with have two people who need something, even if only one of them would ever admit it. We build the plan around the household rather than one person, and it is often the spouse quietly doing everything who needs the respite most.

Start with something that is not personal care. A ride, help with the yard work, a hand with the groceries. Accepting practical assistance is far easier than accepting help with a shower, and once a caregiver is a familiar face rather than a stranger, the rest usually follows at his pace.

We match caregivers on temperament as well as skill, and for veteran clients that often means someone calm, straightforward and unhurried, who does not fuss. We will happily swap the match if the first pairing is not right. That is not a failure, it is how good matching works.
